Highs & Lows

Hiking around the Montserrat

The last day I only traveled. This was a long day!

Itinerary Overview

I flew from Amsterdam to Barcelona, where a friend was waiting for me, it was great to do the trip with someone because I already had a little knowledge about this destination and it was a great support to be able to visit even more things. The same day I arrived, after a long flight we visited Barcelona. There wasn't much time to lose because they are cities where there is a lot to know and all the routes are quite long and expensive. After doing various tourist things and spending the whole day walking, we went to his house in Manresa. It is a small city near Barcelona but very welcoming, without a doubt a must-see if you want to visit and discover something not so common. I stayed here for 3 nights, the weather was quite favorable as it was mild, and despite being a small city we did a lot of things like exploring Manresa, a day trip to Montserrat and eating tapas!

During our day trip in Barcelona we took a short walk in front of the high lights like the Sagrada Familia, a magical place to connect with God and feel a little calm after the hectic journey. Then we went up to a small hill where we had an incredible view of the city, you could see a 360 panorama and it was very fun to see all the little things that stood out. This was also very close to Park Güell. This park is very beautiful! We went on a Thursday or Friday and there weren't many people, so it was very nice, we had wine and delicious food, having a picnic. The weather was quite favourable.

After strolling through the park we headed to Place de Sol where we ate these delicious tapas with sangria. This square is not touristy so I will highly recommend it! It is not so common so there are not so many people

Then we went to Manresa, which is almost an hour away by train and the route is quite easy, you can take advantage of it to rest

The hike

I didn't think I could fall in love with a city like Manresa, but I did! It is a nice city with many students. The atmosphere is just good. It is surrounded by mountains so the views are incredible, it is a quiet city which helps you to get in balance and in connection with nature, it is perfect to give an air to the trip and not feel like you are running all the time.

One day we just explored the city and went to a nice lake, where we had a nice lunch! The weather is also very good, as it is temperate and allows you to wear comfortable clothes and do activities both outdoors and indoors.

Another day we did a day trip to Montserrat. We went by car, but you can also go by train, it's very close. You can choose to visit only Montserrat, but you can also decide to go on a hike like we did. If you do, I recommend that you bring enough food so you don't pay for the food in the restaurant, which is quite expensive and not of such good quality. I think the hike took us about 2.5 hours total.

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

The last day I only traveled, which was a very long day. First I needed to get back to Barcelona. After I needed to go to the airport and then I waited for a long time to catch my flight. So this was not ideal. Maybe next time I would take a taxi so that I save some time to do another activity.
  • Restaurant recommendations?

Playa de Sol has many nice tapas places. Besides in Manresa you have this beautiful lake (Parc de la sequía) with a cute restaurant.
  • Packing tips?

In March it can be already sunny. I would recommend to wear a t-shirt with a blouse or something and maybe a rain coat.
  • Transportation Tips?

Trains work pretty good in Spain!
  • Any surprises?

It surprised me how less people could speak English in Manresa. I'm glad I was with my Spanish speaking friend!
