For the beginning of my one year trip, I spent a weekend in Lisbon, Portugal. It was a wonderful weekend, I was able to meet a lot of people because my hostel was made for that! :)

Highs & Lows

The famous pastries "pasteis de nata" are not to be missed !

It's quite difficult to buy metro tickets from the machines, I had to ask for help.

Itinerary Overview

After an 18 hour bus ride from Bordeaux, France to Lisbon, I was very happy to finally arrive in Portugal :) This weekend was a great mix of good food, beautiful culture, wonderful architecture, bewitching music, and great encounters. I stayed in a very nice hostel and it was very easy to meet new people that were coming from all over the world !

So during 2 days, we were a group with canadian, english, corean and french people. We really enjoyed the fado music which is very wellknown in Portugal. In fact, fado is a Portuguese musical genre, consisting of popular songs with a melancholic theme accompanied by plucked string instruments.

There are a lot of things I really loved! I loved climbing and getting lost in these alleys, stumbling upon little squares in the Alfama, admiring views of the sea and seeing that little streetcar go by so cliché but so charming. I loved eating pasteis de nata, you definetly have to try it !

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

Maybe I will come back in Portugal longer than 2 days, because it was actually very short to discover a city in one week-end. And I would also come in may or june to have a better weather.

  • Anything go wrong during the trip?

No, everthing was super fun :)

  • What tips would you give a friend?

Do not forget to try the portugeese pastries and the famous "green wine". It's delicious !

  • Packing tips?

If you do Sintra, I would recomand you to wear good shoes for hiking.

  • Transportation Tips?

Subways and trains work really well ! Use it :)

  • Booking details?

I would definetly recommand you to use the hostelworld app which is soooo handy when you are a backpacker that has a small budget.
