Highs & Lows

Don't miss the beautiful city of Lisboa and the magical sunset in Lagos!

The water in Portugal is cold. Be brave!

Itinerary Overview

With my two best friends we decided to do a roadtrip in Portugal for two weeks. As my two friends just had their licence we could't rent a car. So we decides to take our friend's car and go to Portugal from Switzerland. It was a long journey but we dit it in two days to make it more easy and it was nice to sing together in the car along the way.

We went first in Nazare, then went to Lisboa, Sines, Porto Covo, Lagos, Albufeira and then went back to Geneva. We mostly wanted to discover the beautiful South of Portugal, enjoy the beaches and scroll into the cute streets of the small cities of Algarve

We really loved discovering the beautiful landscape and sunsets of Algarve. We also discovered the really kind and welcoming people living there always ready to help.

We slept in some airbnbs and hostels. It was actually our first experience in hostels and we loved it.

When we discovered Lagos we felt in love with it. We loved everything about it except the cold water in the sea!

There are many beaches and coves with crystal clear water.  If you want to me more peaceful you should definitely go in one of the coves you can find. The access is less easy than for the beaches but you will be much more relaxed. You can get there by walking from Ponta Piedade for exemple for one of them but just ask your hostel or hotel (they are not marked paths and are full of rocks so you have to be careful).

One of our favourite activities was the kayak tour. During the trip we could see all the beaches, coves and beautiful cliffs of Lagos. With the kayak you will also enter one or two caves along the cliffs. You will also stop for a while at one of the coves to rest for a while before returning to the starting point by letting yourself be pulled by a rope from the boat while sitting in the kayak.

Also, you don't want to miss the unmissable sunset from Ponta da Piedade. From the city center of Lagos you can just take a cab or Uber to Ponta da Piedade and then walk along t he cliffs to enjoy the sunset. Don't forget to take a jacket. The evenings in Portugal are always a little bit chilly. You can also bring with you an apéro to just sit along the cliffs  and enjoy the view.

Finally, take a stroll through the pretty centre of Lagos where you will find something to satisfy your hunger and thirst.

If you want to party, don't worry you will find many nice bars with English songs, reggaeton and more!

It's hard not to love Lisboa with its cute streets and its mosaics.

The first thing I would say is if you go to Lisboa you just cannot miss the pastels de Belém. You have to try them. They are way too good to be missed. And if you don't want to do a long cue just wait a little bit to go in the restaurant. The cue to take away is bigger and inside the restaurant you can eat some and then take away more if you want to.

Another great thing to do is to take the tram line 28 which passes through the most beautiful parts of the capital and gives you a great insight into the beauty of this city. The ticket costs only 3 euros so go for it!

Finally if you want to enjoy the nightlife in Lisboa I advice you to go in the Pink street to enjoy the many bars there!

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

I would spend more time to visit other places in Lisboa and visit fewer places to have more time in each!
  • Anything go wrong during the trip?

I forgot one Birkenstock on a parking while I was cleaning my feet from the sand before going into the car! Don't do the same :)
  • Restaurant recommendations?

Pasteis de Belém to taste the best Pasteis de Nata in the world!
  • Tips you would give a friend?

If you want do go to a surf camp in the Algarve region don't hesitate to go to Wavy surf camp in Sagres. This is an amazing camp where I went the next year after this roadtrip. It's cheap and there is a really noce vibe !
  • Packing tips?

It can be chilly in the evening in Portugal so take some pants and a jacket!
  • Transportation Tips?

The car is nice to visit less touristy place and to enjoy beaches outside the center of the cities!
