Paella and torrijas

Should have stayed longer

Itinerary Overview

This was our first time in Europe, our first country was Spain and we went to three different cities, we flew from Bogotá to Madrid, the trip was around 10 hours, in this type of trips I recommend buying the business class, its more expensive but is totally worth it because you can sleep very comfortable so the jetlag is not so heavy. We stayed at a hotel near “Puerta del sol” which is a famous public square at Madrid, the hotel name was “Hotel Europa” it was great because we could go walking to many spots and there were metro stations near. We stayed for 5 days but one of those we went to Toledo a town near Madrid, we went by train and the trip was around 1 hour long, it was just a one day trip as you can visit the most important things in one day, we went in June so summer was really heavy, water is fundamental and a good pair of tennis too. After Madrid we went to Barcelona by train, the trip was like 3 hours long, we were thinking about taking a bus as it is much cheaper but it was like 8 hours so we thought it wasn’t worth it. In Barcelona we stayed at a hotel in the gothic district called “Sweet in” it was good located and we had near the “Barceloneta” which was one of my favorite spots there. We stayed for three days, I would have liked staying more days as Barcelona is an amazing city, people is so welcoming and the landscape is totally incredible! Also as it has beach and it was June the plan was great. One of our favorite things to do when visiting new countries is food and here we tried some delicious food starting with the awesome Paella!

The first day in Madrid we decided to visit the Bernabéu Stadium, we´re not a big fan of soccer but it was cool seeing the stadium and also the museum, we spend here just like 1 hour and a half, after we went to “Plaza de cibeles” which is the most famous plaza in Madrid, the buildings around are beautiful, that day on the afternoon we decided to go for lunch at “Sobrino de botin” which is supposed to be the world’s oldest restaurant I totally recommend trying the “cochinillo” is simply incredible! Another activity I recommend is going to the Prado Museum there you can find important art paintings such as “Las meninas”, “Christ crucified” and “La maja desnuda”.

Toledo is a small town near Madrid which has a lot of history, one of the main spots here is the cathedral, it is gothic architecture, one of the prettiest cathedrals I have seen, it also has a museum and at that time it was like 10 euros de entry. Also there is “Puerta de bisagra” which you can walk by and it has incredible views! Also for a great view you can go the “Mirador del Valle” the landscape from there is simply incredible you can see Toledo entirely. Finally walking to trough the town and getting lost in the small streets is amazing, you will find amazing spots for pictures and small restaurant with authentic cuisine.

Definitely my favorite city was Barcelona, the vibe, the people, the architecture, the food, everything was perfect! My favorite part was seeing all the buildings designed by Gaudi, it is incredible seeing each detail, I recommend “Casa Batlló” “La pedrera” and “ Park Güel” my favorite one! One must is the cathedral “Sagrada Familia” also designed by Gaudi, other great plan is walking through the “rambla” the most iconic street in Barcelona, you can find lots of brands there and enjoy some delicious street food, but what I recommend the most is “La boqueria” it is a food market, you can buy supermarket food but also you can seat and eat some tapas which is a great plan, food is totally delicious !
