Highs & Lows

The discovery of a skin totally different from mine

Some places are just too touristy

Itinerary Overview

Last year I had the opportunity to make my first trip outside Europe. We had a month ahead of us to explore southern Thailand. We were able to discover many different places, some much more touristy than others: we ventured into the big capital that is Bangkok as well as into the deep countryside, in the border region with Malaysia, which is not recommended for tourists as it can be a region of conflict due to its former membership of this border country, on the idyllic islands well known to mass tourism. During this trip we obviously met a lot of locals and foreigners, but the particularity of the trip was also to experience many different forms of public transport: scooters, trains but also night trains, buses and minibuses, all kinds of different boats, ... Long hours of travel that allowed us to observe (more or less well depending on the means of transport ;)) the many different landscapes that passed before us.

My first stop on this trip was obviously the huge capital of Bangkok. After 11h30 flight from Brussels, I land in this huge city. The tone is set as soon as you leave the airport: taxis approach en masse and negotiate the price of the race. During the trip to the first hostel where I join my friend, the landscapes of skyscrapers pass by, rubbing shoulders with such a big city is not familiar to me, I feel immediately out of place. We finally spent a week in this city and it was not too little so there are things to do, there is something for everyone. So we were able to visit the house of a famous silk industrialist, a well-known material in Thailand, taste the street food, mingle with the crowd that walks around the city at all hours, take our first scooter ride (under our first heavy rain here, for more pleasure), visit the different districts of the city.

After the big capital and a few destinations east of it, I wanted to discover an ornithological park discovered in a book. I insisted a little with my friend to join this rather isolated place. We therefore embarked on a night train journey to reach the city of Surat Thani, a city renowned for being the starting point for access to well-known islands such as Koh Phangan, to then board smaller trains well more local. We are the only tourists and we land in a station where there is only one controller. We embark on a tiny scotter: the driver, my friend and I and of course our two big bags. After this journey we finally arrived in our accommodation on the edge of the magnificent lake of Thale Noi. The next day our hosts offered us a trip aboard a canoe to admire the sunrise and the awakening of the region's fauna and flora: magnificent landscapes and an unforgettable moment!
