We arrived late at night but Kosuma still welcomed us warm-hearted by him. The hostel was a perfect place to stay, to discover the region and to eat very good food. You are very close to the famous Weligama which can be very crowded but if you like its only like a 15 min. scooter ride and you have a good choice of restaurants, bars, cafes and shops. Right in front of the hostel are the surf spots lazy left and lazy right which we really liked, because the build up very slowly and form a nice and cosy wave. Wedigama has a really good Italian restaurant and also a good local restaurant right at the main road but most of the time we just ate at Kosuma’s because their food was also amazing. We went to Unawatuna once but it was rather to do some scuba diving because this place is rather for all inclusive travelers.

The Horton National Park is a pristine park with a lot of wildlife and paths to wander. We took a transport from Ella directly. At the entrance you are being searched for not bringing any one way plastic inside the park, including plastic bottles. After that you are free to go and can take any route you like to explore and enjoy this wonderful place. Just be aware of leeches and wear the socks over your trousers, so they cannot enter. Our walk lead us to the Worlds End Drop which is like a viewpoint over the valley and afterwards to the Baker Falls which are really nice to see. We enjoyed most the beautiful landscape up here and the different animals and plants whose territory we were in. After the day in the Park, you could enjoy a nice tea and some cake at the park entrance when you wait for the bus to pic you up.

Sigiriya was the end of our trip and it was the perfect place to relax after some days of traveling and hiking in the highlands of Sri Lanka. Our intension was to go to the Lions Rock Fortress but we figured it was to touristic and expensive so we went to the Pidurangala instead, which is right next to it. The hike is just 40 min. and you can enjoy a beautiful view over the rather flat jungle. The other day we took some bikes and went around the Thalkote Lake which was also quite nice but the highlight was our hostel. Build around and on a tree this was an exceptional place to be sleeping in. Also the food was fresh from the garden and there was even a little turtle that visited once in a while. The owner told us a lot of the history of this region and his vision of life. The exchange was very enriching and would have stayed longer.

Q & A

  • Restaurant recommendations?

Surfing Wombats Hostel in Midigama, really good italian food. Also check the local Roti places. Its a local food which we still cook at home, very delicious.
  • Tips you would give a friend?

Take the other way around. Most tourists travel clockwise in Sri Lanka, the transports are less crowded the other way around.
  • Packing tips?

When you go to the highlands bring rain jackets and long trousers. The best would be zip trousers as it can get hot quickly.
  • Transportation Tips?

In Sri Lanka for sure the train, its not very fast but the distances are not very far as well.
  • Booking details?

We booked everything via booking or even better look at booking and then check directly with the hostel.
