Itinerary Overview
Following suggestions from other travellers I spent 2 weeks Learning Spanish in San Pedro La Laguna, visiting different areas along Lake Atitlán.
Must does and places to check out in San Pedro La Laguna and along lake Atitlán:
- Learn Spanish no matter what level at Corazón Maya Spanish School. This Spanish School is cheap and amazing!
- Whilst studying, stay with a Guatemalan family where you practice your Spanish every day, eat amazing meals and create great friendships! (this is organised by the school)
- Catch a local football game! the energy and celebrations are amazing! (ask around when the next game is)
- Visit San Juan La Laguna a quick Tuk Tuk or ferry ride from San Pedro. Here check out the amazing view point of Lake Atitlán and San Pedro Volcano at the Trailhead to Mirador Kaqasiiwaan.
- Enjoy a very good happy hour at Bar Sublime followed by live music!
- Eat amazing Middle Eastern foods all throughout San Pedro! though definitely check out Pita Sabij! it was our favourite!
- Looking for a great coffee and are craving fresh bread in the morning? Go to Sababa Cafe! Try their Focaccia breads!

San Pedro La Laguna Learning Spanish and enjoying Lake Atitlán
Staying in San Pedro La Laguna was truely breathtaking. I definitely recommend staying with a Guatemala family through Corazón Maya Spanish School. We had amazing traditional meals, phenomenal views of the lake and lake access, able to swim each morning! Great views and very nice foods can be found in many spots in San Pedro La Laguna.

San Juan La Laguna Enjoy breathtaking viewpoint and walk through beautifully decorated streets.
The Trailhead to Mirador Kaqasiiwaan although having many stairs to reach the top boasts a truly grand view of Lake Atitlán and San Pedro volcano. After taking in this amazing site we walked through the beautifully decorated streets of San Juan La Laguna. The streets are filled with street art, art canopies hanging over the streets and many bustling street stalls selling foods and arts.
Q & A
What would you have changed?
It would have been even more amazing if I could have stayed for 1 month here in San Pedro La Laguna. Learning more Spanish and getting extra time with the friends I made whilst living here. The Spanish is so well priced and so well taught that I would urge everyone to learn for as long as you can!Anything go wrong during the trip?
We arrived in Panajachel after 5pm and so weren't able to catch a public ferry to San Pedro La Laguna. This meant that we had to pay a lot extra for a private ferry over to San Pedro.Restaurant recommendations?
For great coffee and breads go to Sababa cafe. If your looking to enjoy some of the incredible Middle Eastern food available in San Pedro go to the very highly rated Pita Sabij.Tips you would give a friend?
Learn Spanish in San Pedro La Laguna at Corazón Maya Spanish School!Packing tips?
It was cold in the mornings and evenings so bring layers and a light jumper. There was also rain on a few of the days we were there so a light rain jacket would also be very beneficial.Transportation Tips?
Use the public ferry which is very inexpensive to get around Lake Atitlán very easily! and Tuk Tuks. know that when using Tuk Tuks to agree on a price before you get in and haggle a little. Prices will be increased as a result of being a foreigner.Any surprises?
