The amazing Meteora Rock

Restaurants can be expensive

Itinerary Overview

Me and my partner, I both live in the City of London. After months of hard work, we were craving sun, sea and sand and decided to visit Greece. We had been to parts of Greece before, but busier and more touristy parts of the county. This time we wanted something different. Something a little more off the beaten track. Something quieter and more relaxed. We did some research and decided to visit Vari and Meteora.

Vari is a beautiful, quiet location in Greece with amazing beaches and is home to the incredible Lake Vouligemi.

Meteora is a town that is host to an incredible rock formation in Greece. The epic rock houses some beautiful Orthodox Christian temples on the sides and into of the formation. The massive rock makes for a great hike, it can be scaled within a day.

After so many months without sun and with a lot of cold at home, arriving to this place with so much beauty and good weather makes you think that you never want to leave this place again

Have you ever been to a spa where your feet have spent time in a tank of tiny fishes which gently eat the dead skin of your feet? These fishes are called Garra Rufa and are also known as doctor fish. Lake Vouligemi gives you the opportunity to have your whole body treated by the Garra Rufa, as the lake is full of them. I spent hours in the lake, submerged and I felt great afterwards. Its safe to swim in. The lake has amazing views of the cliff surrounding it and is the perfect spot for a beautiful sunset and romantic dinner. The local beach I visited in Vari is called Parali Lumi Vouliagmenis. Its an amazing location. Not too busy and is the perfect place to chill on some deck chairs and enjoy the sun, sea and sand.

The town is also host to a mushroom Museum which I really enjoyed. During your hike, if you keep your eyes peeled you may come across some of the mushrooms which you learn about in the museum. Keep your eye out for large tortoises on the hike up the Meteora rock. Beware of disturbing wasps in the bushes off the pathway at the top of the rock. Many attacked us on our way down after we sat off the usual track in the bushes which grow around the top of the bolder. I would also highly recommend downloading maps.me. This app is amazing for offline treks, and details hike trails up the Meteora rock.
