Highs & Lows

Some of the most beautiful sunsets I've seen in my lifetime Popoyo

Pacific coast = hot, hot, hot!

Itinerary Overview

I started my trip through Central and South America in Nicaragua and I couldn't have wished for a better place. To me, Nicaragua offered the perfect balance between cultural variety, adventure and sufficient infrastructure for travelers to kick-start my journey.

Popoyo - SUYO Cabañas

Staying at SUYO Cabañas for me was a luxurious outspurt in what would become an otherwise very budget-conscious trip. It coloured my experience in Popoyo warm shades of golden-red, a gentle breeze blowing across the cabaña while we hid from the afternoon heat, reading a book in the hammock with a view on the Pacific. If you are able to afford it, I highly recommend adding this stop to your itinerary. And while there make sure not to miss out on the Guasacate Tide Pools just a 30-minute drive away.

Ometepe - El Zopilote

El Zopilote is an organic farm and hostel located just north of Volcán Maderas on Ometepe Island. It is a unique place to visit, sure to be different from any hostel you've stayed at before and definitely worth the 20 minute hike up from the main road. The best part? The big variety of free workshops they offer on a daily basis! Also, be sure to drop by El Pital Chocolate Paradise for a chocolatey indulgence-moment. Another hidden gem: kayaking on Rio Istián.

Arriving in Popoyo may feel like a disillusion at first; the waves are high making it tricky to go for a swim (but it's great for surfers), the wind is strong causing beach sand to drift upwards and cut across your lower legs, the sun is very bright meaning the afternoons can get extremely hot... But don't let these things put you off! It’d be a shame to miss out on Popoyo’s magic.

Wake up in the morning to step onto the still-cool sand, walk towards the Pacific waters crashing down in meters-high waves just a short distance away from your feet. Take in all the little ocean creatures hiding between the rocks, the sun reflecting on the surface of the wet shore. Let all the magic sink in and take a moment to breathe deeply, before making your way towards the kitchen and preparing yourself a delicious breakfast. Honestly, who doesn't want to start their day like this!?

Popoyo is a place to take it easy. To allow yourself to sit back, read a book or simply find time and space to reflect. There's literally not much else to do for most of the day, since it gets too hot anyway. Then the best part: starting your stroll over the beach at the end of the afternoon, watching the sky transform into a million different shades and colours... I promise, you won't be able to shift your gaze.

Ometepe offers a true pallet of opportunities. Whether you like to hike Volcán Concepción (more mountainous) or Volcán Maderas (more jungley), prefer to rent a scooter and discover the rural village life in the less touristic areas of the island, relax at the shore of the lake with a cocktail while marveling at the sunset, go kayaking on Rio Istián (definitely recommended!), treat yourself with a moment of pure chocolate joy at El Pital, or participate in one of the various daily workshops offered at El Zopilote.

I highly recommend taking your time to visit Ometepe. Most people I met there stayed longer than they intended to: the island simply gets you hooked, and there's so much to see and do and the vibe is contagious. You won't want to leave. It is simply one of the most beautiful places in the world, if you ever have the oportunity to visit Ometepe trust me that it is going to be one of the best experiences in your life.

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

I would've rented a motorcycle for at least two days on Ometepe Island, since there is much more to explore and see. One day is simply not enough.
  • Restaurant recommendations?

El Pital Chocolate Paradise: great views, great vibes, great chocolate & coffee!
  • Tips you would give a friend?

The cocoa ceremony at El Zopilote was an unexpected emotional journey. I highly recommend allowing yourself to be open to this opportunity.
  • Transportation Tips?

Traveling by 'chicken buses' is very doable, as long as you're flexible. Also on Ometepe island, there's really no need to take the more pricey private transportation options. Getting to Popoyo is a bit more tricky, though.
  • Any surprises?

    No, just perfect!
  • Booking details?

Make sure to secure your reservation at SUYO Cabañas on time, since the place is popular and there are only 6 cabañas.
