Nicaragua Beach Vacation

The Corn islands are 2 islands, Little and Big corn, located in the Caribbean ocean. Everywhere you look you have postcard views. The beaches have white sand, the water is clear and very calm and palm trees everywhere. When you get there you notice immediately the relaxed vibe the locals have. To get there either cost you a lot of money with a propeller airplane or it will take a lot of time. I travel for a long time so I chose the cheap transportation, with local bus from Managua (busstation Mayoreo) to Bluefields and from there a ferry to the islands. The bus ride takes 8 hours and it is a chicken bus and from what I heard I brakes down often. We were lucky and got there whiteout any troubles. After one night in Bluefields we took the ferry to Big corn island. It is an old and very slow ferry, it only goes 2 times a week and it took us 6 hours. The whole trip costed us less the 20 dollars.

On Big corn island there are mostly locals. It is very interesting to see how they are living a slow life. We rented a bike (10 dollar a day) and biked around the island, it is a nice day trip, we went to beautiful beaches and snorkeled there. There are also beautiful diving spots around the island were you can dive with reef and nurse sharks.

After a few days we took the lancha to Little corn island. Tip: the boats in the afternoon are cheaper and on the way back the morning boat is the cheapest. Little corn island is the prettiest island I ever visited. It has stunning beaches all around. The reef is close and you can snorkel there. In the middle of the island there is a jungle to cross to the other side and to one of my favorite beaches, Otto beach.

Ometepe a beautiful island existing out of 2 fire and water volcanoes located in the middle of Lake Nicaragua. To get there you take a ferry from Rivas to Moyogalpa or San José del Sur. To get around on the island you can hire a scooter or car (watch out because the road is in a bad state), colectivo, bus or hitchhike. The busses are really slow so most of the time we hitchhiked, it was really easy and safe.

I was 4 weeks on Ometepe Island, most of my time spend in Inanitah an earth based spiritual community. It is located on volcano Maderas and is surrounded by peaceful and wild nature. The natural pool has a stunning panoramic view over the lake and volcano Conception, where you can see epic colorful sunsets. It is a place for people who wish to live in harmony with nature and in pursuit of conscious personal and collective evolution. They try to minimize there environmental impact by building with natural materials and eating mostly healthy locally grown organic food.

Every day volunteers offer free classes of yoga, breathwork, meditation and other activities for personal growth. Inanitah is a place were the most of your attention is going inward for self-exploration and growth. Living in a community where you feel supported and connected with like minded people gives a lot of space for that.

In the weekends we went out to explore the nature on the island and a weekly visit at café Campestre for delicious food and to buy peanut butter for the next week. Zopilote, another hostel, offers a lot of activities you can participate for a small fee.
