Itinerary Overview

When you visit Mallorca, it makes totally sense to book a hotel somewhere you like for the whole stay and do several day trips during your vacation. The island is quite small and from the capital Palma you can basically reach any part of the island within 2hours by car.

We stayed in Can Pastilla. In my opinion it is the perfect area. You are really close to the airport and to Palma de Mallorca, but you can also walk up to the party mile! You will have no trouble with finding a parking lot here, which is also quite handy.

If you plan a visit, I would recommend to stay 5-7 days. You can easily fit 2-3 day trips, but also have enough time to expore the capital Palma and chill at the beach.

  • 4 Nights: Palma
    Capital of Mallorca
  • Day trip: Santanyí
Beautiful beach with typical white houses with green doors - perfect for pictures!
  • Day trip: Sóller
Charming old town, beautiful church and nice shopping
  • Day trip: Portals Vells
Nice hike to a beautiful hidden beach

Of course, visiting the capital is a must, when you are on Mallorca!
You will find great places for shoping like your typical H&M and Zara, but you will also find several small shops where you can find beautiful local stuff. For a stroll through the old town, some shopping and lunch you can plan half a day - a day.

And of course you cannot miss out on the Cathedral! It is really large and you can already spot it from the street along the ocean. In my opinion you do not need to buy a ticket to visit the inside of the cathedral, because the outside is the specacular thing about it :)

If you want to party, you definitly need to visit Arenal! It is only a short 15mins drive from Palma. Funny enough, during summer you will mainly find Germans there - no Spanish people! Also the staff at restaurants and clubs mainly speaks German or English. The reason for that is that this part of the island developed to the party get-away for Germans. The "Schinkenstrasse" (english: Ham street :D) is definitely the hotspot of the area. If you want to experience a classic German party, you should pay a visit to Bierkönig. It is like a large party tent, playing only Schlager songs.  An alternative to Bierkönig would be Megapark. For both clubs you do not need to pay any admission fee, so you have nothing to lose ;) Prepare for a cultural shock tho!

Santanyi is located in the south-eastern part of the the island. It takes about 45mins to get there by car from the capital Palma.

The old town of Santanyi is really charming! Take your time and walk through the small steets, drink a coffee in one of the cute cafes and shop like the locals.

After strolling through the city, drive up to the beach. The beaches are the main reason why we visited this area! I can recommend either Cala Santanyi or Cala Llombards. These beaches are quite different to the beaches you find around Palma. While the beaches around Palma are wuite flat and long, the beaches around Santanyi are more hidden and surrounded by rocks and caves. Both beaches are really clean, the water is crystal clear and most of the time they are not too crowded. On the sides of the beach you can find small houses located directly at the water. These white houses with their green doors and garages are typical for that area and give a good backdrop for vacation pictures :)

Another beach near Santanyi which is extremely picturesque is "Calo des Moro". To reach this beach, it needs a short hike from the parking lot. The hike is not extremely hard, but there is almost no shdow on the way.  Therefore I recommend to definitely wear a hat and suitable shoes. As there are no supermarkets or cafes along the beach, make sure to bring something to eat and drink.

Not only the beach is beautiful to explore - but also the cliffs and caves! Make sure to take a walk around the area, I am sure you will find some hidden gems and amazing views!

As this beach became quite popular over the last years, I would recommend to go either early in the morning or later in the afternoon. We went there around noon and it was quite crowded. If there are any people, it can become hard to find a place for your stuff!

Another nice day trip is a trip to the north-eastern part of the island - Soller and surrounding. You can reach Soller within 40mins from Palma.

Soller is a beautiful city, you can park nearby and explore the city center by foot. The main attraction is the church "Parroquia de Sant Bartomeu de Sóller". If you wait patiently on the "Plaça de la Constitució" in front of the curch, you can see the cute little tram passing by. This is also a very nice picture spot. When we visited, the whole Plaza was covered with colorful umbrellas! Hopefully they are still around :)

After exploring the city center you can drive up to harbor. There are many restaurants with a beautiful view on the harbour where you can have lunch. If you prefer to relax at the beach, you can also do so at "Platja den Repic".

On your way to Soller or on the way back to your hotel I would recommend a small detour to the village Valldemossa. It is another old town, but very different to Soller and Santanyi. The reason for that is that Valldemossa is located more on the hillside. The drive there is very scenic, you will find several parking lots on the side of the road where you can just take a short break and enjoy the view. In Valledemossa you can spend a few hours walking around the charming old town, do a bit of shopping and drink a coffee in one of the beautiful cafes.

Tip: Check the weather beforehand, it can be really different to Palma!

On Mallorca you can find countless beautiful beaches. If you are a bit more adventurous, I can recommend to pay a visit to Cala Portals Vells and it's beach. Why adventurous? Instead of parking near the beach, you can park at one of the high points of this area and hike down to the ocean. There are several different hikes and I can promise you, that each and every one of these hikes brings perfect views over the Cala!

Make sure to wear suitbale shoes, flip flops will definitely not be the right choise here!

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

Nothing - Mallorca is always worth a visit whole year around :)
  • Tips you would give a friend?

Eat where the locals eat! Don't miss out on Paella and tapas
  • Packing tips?

    Bring sunscreen!
  • Transportation Tips?

If you plan to see something from the island, you should definitely rent a car! In case you prefer to stay around Palma area, the bus transportation system is also quite good.
  • Booking details?

I always book my hotels via booking.com. If you plan to stay in Arenal, it can be a bit noisy during day and night. Book a hotel more towars Can Pastilla then - it's only a few hundre meters away from the hotspot area, but already way more quite and relaxed!
