Highs & Lows

Sleeping on top of the cliffs in a van

A short trip to Lagos which personally i didnt like too much

Itinerary Overview

I arrived at the airport of Faro and rented a car or 2 wees because in Portugal it is very common and legal to sleep in the car on the cliffs but first I went to the village of Arrifana for some surfing. The village itself is very relaxed and the vibes very open. I discovered that people help each other out whether they are friends or strangers. The bay of Arrifana is a perfect place for beginners and sometimes intermediate surfers and the sunrises and sunsets are incredible. If you want to go out in the evening there is a famous and very cool pizza night every Friday in the hinterland at a community with good music under the stars. I can really recommend this, just ask around gather some people and go together. For visiting a beautiful beach nearby you could go to Praia de Amoreira which has a river mouth and a nice restaurant.

After staying 2 weeks in Arrifana I wanted to change place and went to Sagres which is a beautiful little town with the famous Fortaleza de Sagres. There are a lot of possibilities to go out or to eat different styles of food. First I stayed in a hostel but I didn’t like it too much so I went with the car on top of the cliffs of the Praia do Beliche close to Sagres, which was really perfect. You wake up next to the ocean, can choose between various surf spots, relax at the beach, enjoy the beautiful cliffs and sleep in to the sunset. There are always other people sleeping in their cars or caravans so if you want some company you can easily find it. The only thing was I didn’t have a possibility to cool food so having a cheese in the car with 30 degrees outside may not be the best idea, especially for the smell.

At the end of this vacation Lisbon was my last stop, so I took the train which is quite a beautiful ride. Entering Lisbon by train you will cross the bridge of 25 April and the Tujo river which is quite impressive . Before a lot of people would tell me they love this city so I wanted to see for myself why and now I can completely understand it. From the buildings and roads that are all made out of light soapstone and the street lighting is in yellow, people are outside eating and enjoying a vino tinto in a warm climate is just a perfect combination. There are a lot of unique and beautiful sites with beautiful vistas on the river and the bars and clubs are very different and unique. Definitely a place to come back to.

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

Not flying to Portugal but taking the van and descending the whole coast is a much better idea.
  • Anything go wrong during the trip?

Once sb tried to steal my board from under the car, taking chances as I slept in the car and the board was outside. So now, better store it inside or fix it really good to the roof
  • Packing tips?

You dont really need a lot. Wheather is always warm and I wore my boardshorts 70% of the time.
