Highs & Lows

Hike, swim or chill around the lakes

Not massive touristic attraction, but the lakes are definitely pearls of Northern Italy

Itinerary Overview

Lago di Fusine : Hiking around the lower and the upper lakes was a good idea. Think about going early in the morning or in the afternoon to avoid the tourists and the numerous bikers (the lake is on a famous biking itinerary). Enjoy the clear blue water and the dolomites moutains all around. Many hiking itineraries are available and well-indicated !

Lago di Cavazzo : I found this lake by accident, on my road back to Udine and I stopped a bit to chill around the lake. The access can be difficult if you park along the road so the advice is to park in a parking area and walk around the lake to find your perfect spot ! Then, don't forget you bathing suit, even if the lake's water can be a bit cold, it is the ideal spot to have a refreshing moment after a hot day !

Here's my report about a beautiful place I visited during my trip to Northern Italy. I went to this gorgeous place called Lago Di Fusine, where I went for a hike around the lake. You can park your car before the natural park or pay to get closer to the lake and have your car on the parking which is situated along the main road(5 euros per car). If you park out of the natural park, you have to walk around thirty minutes, but it's a really nice walk all along a river taking its source from the lake. Every hike path is indicated on a big map at the welcome area of the lake. I went for the lower lake hike (1,5 hour tour) but in the middle of the journey, a extension of the hike was indicated to explore the upper lake. I chose to do it, it extended the hike to 3 hours for the 2 lakes, and it was really worth it !! The upper lake is even more breathtaking. I also have to say that the paths for both lake are easy to do for all the family and these natural spaces are really clean and well-preserved. My only warning is to come out of the affluence times, think about arriving early in the morning or in the afternoon. This lake is known by the german and autrian people because it is situated right in the middle of a famous cycling route joining Austria to the Mediterranean sea.

If you don't want to go hiking, you can rent a boat to go on the lower lake or have a snack (there is a tiny restaurant) next to the clear blue water. About the clothing, I went in August and it was quite chilly, think about taking something warm. And as for the shoes, take good ones, some portions of the hike can be muddy.

Then, when I finished my tour around the lakes, I stopped in the surrounding villages to have lunch, there are many small towns to visit, do not hesitate to stop !

The second lake I'm going to introduce is the Lago Di Cavazzo. I found this one by chance, on my way back from a hike in the Dolomites mountains. I stopped along the road and park the car, I had a splendid  view above the lake. Then a small but steep pathway went down to the lake, I took it and had a good time chilling around the lake and I even put my feet in the water.

I came  back two days later at sunset to swim in the water. It was quite cold but once in the water, I couldn't come out, it was so nice after a hot day ! There is a small camping/parking/picnic area (next to Alla Darsena Ristorante) where you can park (a few euros during the day and free at night.

The public coming to the lake was mostly locals with their family and friends. The surroundings and the lake are super clean and well-preserved.

There, you can go for a 8km hike or go fishing ! Dogs are allowed.

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

I could have been more equiped to go on a further hike in the Lago di Fusine
  • Anything go wrong during the trip?

I shouldn't have paid for the parking at Lgo Di Fusine and park the car outside the natural park, the path to join the lake is good and nice (you follow the river)
  • Tips you would give a friend?

Go outside peak hours to explore lakes in Dolomites!
  • Transportation Tips?

    We used a car
  • Any surprises?

Always look around you and stop if something looks nice, but be careful with the roads, they're not always practicable (sometimes very steep)
  • Booking details?

No need of booking for the lakes!
