Itinerary Overview

In June 2022 I started my travels in Athens (I ended up staying three months in Greece). I like to take things slow so did not choose to visit plenty of destinations in Greece. But the places I discovered were amazing. I travel on a budget so I tend to stay in hostels which is also a great opportunity to find out about places to visit. I've already been to Athens in January and I loved it! The city exceeded everything that I could have imagined. It is modern in terms of cafes and restaurants, yet there are ruins all over the city. It is surrounded by mountains and there are several viewpoints. In total I stayed two weeks in Athens and did two trips during this time. I did a day trip to the island Hydra which is a common destination and close by. In this trip report I want to focus on the city of Athens and Hydra.

I have documented the second trip in this blog post: https://www.atlasguru.com/itinerary/backpacking-in-greece/d67e42f0-8855-11ed-9cbc-d9fcc242c983/

Athens is one of my favorite cities I've visited so far! Most of the time I spent in the neighborhood of Exarcia where the WIA hostel is located. You will find a lot of vegan-friendly cafes and restaurants as well as cool thrift stores. I enjoy dancing and raves from time to time: On my first day I went to Plissken Festival with rock, hip-hop and techno music which was such an amazing experience. On a different night I went to a goa trance rave. There is a lot of ancient culture to explore too. A must-do is to walk up the Acropolis. As a European student you can visit for free. Right beside is the Areopagus Hill which is perfect for sunset and allows you an amazing view over Athens. Another good viewpoint and place to hang out is Lofos Strefi hill in Exarcia. During the day one can stroll through Botanical Museum of the National Gardens which is the botanical garden in Athens. It offers some shade too!

Hydra is easy to reach by ferry which takes around two hours and departs at Piraeus harbor. From the center you can take the metro to the harbor (check on google maps for metro connection). It takes around 40 mins. I recommend taking a ferry around 9 am so you can make the most out of your day. I went together with a friend that I met at WIA hostel. When we arrived on the island we started off by walking around and uphill the narrow alleys and barely came across people. There are no cars on the island, just donkeys. After a few hours of walking we got an iced latte and later on some olives and bread at one of the many taverns by the harbor. It got super hot during midday. In the early afternoon we made our way to Avlaki Beach where we went into the water. The color of the water is stunning and the temperature was perfect. We remained there the second half of the day sunbathing, reading and swimming. Eventually we took the ferry back to Athens.

Q & A

I went to Cookoomela Grill a lot of times! Right next to it is Magic Kitchen (both vegan).
  • Tips you would give a friend?

My favorite thrift stores in Athens were Vintage Love and Yesterday's Bread Second Hand.
  • Packing tips?

    Sunscreen, hat and swimsuit!
  • Transportation Tips?

In Athens you can get around by metro. In order to get to Hydra you take a ferry. You can purchase the ticket online in advance. I recommend doing it at least one day in advance. Seats are limited.

Lodging

  • Most of the time I stayed at When in Athens (WIA) Hostel which was pretty much brand new when I visited. I loved the comfort and the cleanliness of the hostel. The staff is super friendly, I asked them a lot of questions and they were always happy to help.
