Climbing in Osp

Nothing went wrong :)

Itinerary Overview

Trieste is a great city next to the Mediterranean coast and very close to the Slovenian border: The ideal destination for a short trip into the sun. People interested in history can explore the city's rich culture as it belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Free Territory of Trieste and Italy in the past. Our culinary friends will enjoy fresh fish, Italia coffee and Aperol Spritz.  Outdoor fans will be happy exploring its mountainous surroundings and the nearby Slovenian village Osp is a must for climbers from all over Europe. We reached there by Flixbus and one came by train to Ljubljana and then changed to a bus. Weather was perfect and we where all happy to take some time off from university, because the semester start was quite intense. From Triest we took a bus to the outskirts of the city and crossed the border walking to Slovenia, which was beautiful.

With its pleasant climate and easy access via Flixbus, Trieste is the ideal destination for a short trip, without a doubt here you can escape the cold and rainy phase of Germany. The bus terminal is located in the center of the city, so we were able to start exploring the city instantly. This is quite practical because it saves a lot of time and you get to know a lot in a short time. To begin with, we took a walk along the sea coast and observed the enormous cruise ships from the Molo Audace pier, there were enormous ships of a size that we had never seen. Our friends picked us up and we had an Aperol Spritz in an authentic bar on Canal Grande. It was perfect for a hot afternoon and wanting to cool off. Later, we took a walk to Miramar. It is a 19th-century castle with a beautiful park on the coast, if you like history I recommend you visit it, it is very interesting. The walk took us about an hour and I would definitely recommend it.

With more than 500 well-equipped sport climbing routes, and best quality limestone, the Osp area is a paradise for every sport climber. While we climbed mostly single-pitch routes, you can also find some routes with two or more pitches. We spent 4 nights at the nearby camping site which is equipped with bathrooms with warm showers, a fireplace and a restaurant. There are also some guest houses in Osp for people who prefer sleeping indoors. Other than that, the village of Osp does not offer a lot of infrastructure, so we used to go grocery shopping at Stramare shopping center on the Italian side of the border. To get around we used to hitchhike, but there are also some buses going from Osp to Trieste as well as Koper. You can easily access most climbing crags by a quick walk from the campsite. Some of my favorite routes were "Roja" (6a+) in Črni Kal's sector Sidarta and "Vik in Krik" (6a+) in Osp's sector Babna.
