Cayo sombrero is the most beautiful island to visit

This country was going through a very difficult political and economic situation

Itinerary Overview

I traveled to venezuela in 2017 when the political and economic situation was very difficult, but to make my bicycle trip through south america I had to go through this country. But fortunately the months I spent in this country have always been well received by Venezuelans and the opportunity to visit Chichiriviche, a Caribbean town with amazing beaches and islands, one of the most beautiful places I have visited.

Chichiriviche is very touristy, as it is one of the starting points to the islands of the Morrocoy National Park and nearby is the Cuare Wildlife Refuge, where tourists can delight in observing the white herons and corocoras both at sunrise and  At dusk.

Many boats depart from the same port of Chichiriviche to the different islands and you only have to go there, haggle a price or sign up with any other group that is interested in going to the same island as you to lower the price.

  • Day trip: Cayo Salado
  • 1 Night: Cayo Pescadores
  • 1 Night: Cayo Sombrero
  • 10 Nights: Chichiriviche
it was recommended by many travelers, for the beauty of this place and also because there is a house that receives travelers.

Cayo sal gets its name from a saline surrounding the island, it is the island that is closest to chichiriviche, to get there in about 10 min.  you have to go to the port of the city and wait for the speedboat to complete the number of passengers to leave towards the cayo, there are almost always many people for being closer. It has a relatively large size and is decorated by a spectacular landscape of green palms, peaceful and clear waters, white arenas.

In front of the cayo you can see a peculiar chapel that was built by their ancestors, it is one of the few existing constructions in the Morrocoy National Park, and it is the place where the locals have the custom to start the walk of the Virgen del Valle.

This place has some services such as the rental of awnings and chairs, restaurants and bathrooms, you can also get some sellers of oysters, coconut sweets, ice cream and beautiful crafts.

Cayo pescadores it is the most distant island, it is 40 minutes from Chichiriviche and generally doesn't present a large influx of visitors. Its name is due to the fact that the area is protected by coral reefs, which has led to a great abundance and variety of fish.  It is characteristic for being an aquatic area of shallow depth, tide and vegetation.

We went in a group and camped in the key, we paid a boat service to take us to pick us up the next day, there were no services of any kind, so we took our food and water necessary to spend the day and night. We also carry snorkeling and fishing equipment, as it was allowed in this place.  we caught enough fish for the whole group to eat.

During the day there were a lot of people on the beach and at the sea a lot of motor boats and yachts with loud music, but in the late afternoon everyone left, so on the island only our group remained, so we could enjoy the tranquility of the place, just listening to the sound of the waves of the sea and birds.

It is located 15 minutes from Chichiriviche is the second largest island and very frequented by tourists, it has two extensive beaches. It is filled with a forest of green and lush palm trees that provide natural shade to its visitors. On the island there are some services such as the rental of awnings and chairs, bathrooms, restaurant, and from the vendors you could buy some seafood such as oysters, shrimp and lobster.

We were a group of 7 people and we also decided to spend a night camping, we hired a motorboat to take us and pick us up the next day. We leave early around 8 a.m., we bring water, food, tent and snorkel mask.  We spent the afternoon at sea diving and observing corals and many species of fish of all kinds of colors.

At night there weren't many people, we had the feeling that the island was only ours, it was a beautiful night because the island was illuminated by the light of the moon that was full, a friend had brought her guitar and we made music, danced and  We laughed a lot, then we went swimming in the sea to see the plankton but this day there wasn't much.

Club de la luna

Many travelers recommend us to visit chichiriviche, it is a Town with paradisiacal islands called cayos and rich in fauna and flora, as it is part of the national park of morrocoy.

In the town is El club de la Luna, which is a project by Zulay, a Venezuelan who has also traveled a lot, who set up a house on the beach to receive backpackers, it can be reached on the recommendation of another traveler with the sole condition of help keep the house clean, doing some repair, there are many who painted murals.

Through the house for many years people from all over the world have passed, which there is a guestbook and messages, with hundreds of messages from travelers. We shared good moments among the people who were in this house, there were always many activities to do, such as yoga, theater, music and crafts.

Its main street has many stores where you can buy food, ice, soft drinks or also bathing suits and towels. It also has several hotels and inns. As soon as you reach the dock, you can hire the boat services to visit the nearest islets.

I spent 10 days in chichiriviche, as I met the local people, in which I learned a lot from their culture. At that time, there was a 7-day party in homage to a holy virgen del valle, which the party was on the main street where it was at the port of the town, there was a music and dance typical of this place called the Tambor that is of African origin, when they are dancing they stay in a circle and do it as a competition between them.
