Itinerary Overview
Cartagena is a port city on the Caribbean coast of Colombia and one of the most beautiful and conserved cities in America. The historic center of Cartagena is within the old city walls built by the Spanish. It's a charming place with 13 kilometers of walls, as well as colonial squares, attractive cobbled streets and colorful houses.
Outside the downtown area, on the hill of San Lázaro, the Castle of San Felipe de Barajas is located, built in the 17th century. And the historic Getsemaní neighborhood with colorful houses, graffiti and very busy places in the night, restaurants, bars and hostels that are cheaper than the ciudad amurallada.
With a tropical climate, the city also has popular beaches, such as Barú Island, with white sand beaches and palm trees, and the Rosario Islands. in the south of ciudad amurallada is a playa bocagrande in the neighborhood of the same name, one of the best known in Cartagena de Indias.
Q & A
What would you have changed?
I met barrio getsemaní on the last day in cartagena, if I had met the first few days I would have stayed in this neighborhood.
What tips would you give a friend?
The Getsemani neighborhood is a good place to stay, as it offers an authentic look at what life in the city is really like for the locals.
Any surprises?
My biggest surprise was swimming in the sea on the island of Barú at night as there was a large amount of fluorescent plankton, it was amazing to see the bright colors when we stirred the waters of the sea.
