Nice short biking trip through wine yards and along the Mosel in Germany
Highs & Lows
Wine yards and the view along the way
The time we went it can be pretty cold in the mornings.
We left on friday afternoon and went on a two day trip to Trier with the race bike. Along the way we found beautiful places to stay at, nice terraces to chill on and take a well deserved break. The total amount of kilometers that we biked was about 175 km. The way is easy to follow as it is called the Moselradweg and there are signs everywhere to help you not get lost.
Day 1: Koblenz to Klotten (44,9 km)
We went with the train to Koblenz and ttarted biking towards Klotten. After about 2 hours we arrived in a nice little place. Everyone is prepared for hosting people that travel with bikes, so it is no hassle at all to store your bikes.
Day 2: Klotten to Zeltingen-Rachting (65,9 km)
On day two we took our time to bike the next part. We took breaks wherever we felt like it and of course we also tried a Flammkuchen and a Federweisser (german wine that is typical for the region and the time of year as it is young wine with more yeast in it). We arrived in Zeltingen-Rachting and went to have dinner close by, where we could go with our bikes.
Day 3: Zeltingen-Rachting to Trier (65,2 km)
On sunday we had the plan to bike the full three hours in the morning so we could have a chill afternoon on a terrace in Trier. It was cold and misty at first, so we put our gloves on to keep us warm, but after an hour biking the sun came out and it was beautiful! The beers and food on a terrace were well deserved once we arrived in Trier after a little more than 3 hours.
With the train you can go back to Koblenz or any other station.
Klotten is a nice little place which is maybe a little sleepy, but you can still always find at least one bar or restaurant open to get some food or drinks. It's charme lies within the old looks and beautiful buildings that let you feel the history all around you. And it is well situated for a nice rest during your biking trip. On the way from Klotten to Zeltingen-Rachting there are actually many different points where you can bike up a hill to get a beautiful view over wineyards and the river. Be aware that this is quite a difference in height that you have to bike... But the view is way worth the struggle and burning in your legs.
Biking from Zelting-Rachtig to Trier in one morning takes quite an effort, but when you arrive in Trier it is beautiful. It is one of the oldest cities and you see history all around you. I would definitely recommend a longer stay there if you have the time.
Along the way you will see so many beautiful spots again that for us it was actually a shame that we only had so little time. There are so many beautiful terraces where you can stop for a cup of coffee and some pies. Also just sitting along the riverside is really pretty.
If you have more time you could even bike on to Luxembourg from Trier which is supposed to be a really beautiful trip as well.
Q & A
What would you have changed? We biked up the stream and that made the biking difficult sometimes. I would recommend starting in Trier and going towards Koblenz and if you ahve the time stay longer in Trier.
Anything go wrong during the trip? Not really, only the weather is something to keep in mind as it is getting colder in october the mornings can be pretty cold.
Restaurant recommendations? There are so many different terraces and places where you can eat. In Trier I would recommend the Cafe Greco for a refreshment. You could visit a Weinhaus in Klotten to get some nice food and a wine tasting. Always check their opening hours as a lot of businesses are small and are not always open on every day.
Tips you would give a friend?Do this biking trip and enjoy it as much as you can. Take your time for the trip
Packing tips?Warm clothes and multiple layers so you are warm enough in the morning, but can also enjoy the sun in the afternoons.
Transportation Tips?Taking the train with your bike is really easy in Germany but don't forget to buy the proper ticket (bike ticket). And also think about buying a group ticket for the train as it already makes sense if you are with 3 people.
