Itinerary Overview

I know very well the Belgium country as my family has been living there for years. Therefore, there are two main cities that I could recommend every traveler that is passing by this country to absolutely visit: Bruxelles and Tournai. I have lived in Bruxelles for 2 years and more than 20 years in Tournai. So, I can definitely share a lot of places to visit, bars to taste the best local beers and also restaurants to eat delicious food! If you want to really take your time and have the opportunity to discover those two cities in depth, you should stay at least 2 days in Tournai, and 3 to 4 days in Brussels (as it is the capital of Belgium and also the biggest and most interesting city of the country). To travel between the different cities, people usually use the train as it is really fast, usually on-schedule and not so expensive.

When arriving at the Brussels central station, you can directly walk to the Grand place, considered as one of the most beautiful square in the world (located only a few meters away from the station). There, you can spend time admiring the beautiful historic Town Hall, the sculptures and other buildings, and walk through the streets around to look at the very typical and historic small houses. Don’t forget to also pass by the « Manneken Pis », an emblematic figure of Belgium! If you are getting hungry, you can eat one typical Belgian dish in the different restaurants that are on the Grand place. I would definitely recommend you to take the « moules-frites »! For low budgets, you can also just grab a pitta in one of the best kebab restaurant in town: Pitta Plaka.
To have a drink, you can go to the famous « Delirium » bar and taste the Delirium beer, of course (and it is also just next to the Grand place!).

The city of Tournai, one of the oldest town in Belgium and aslo know as the city of the fives spires (because of the 5 towers of its cathedral), is very well known for its multiple historical buildings. On the main square, you can admire the « Notre Dame cathedral » or the Belfry (you can walk the stairs to the top for free during the day and enjoy a view on the city!). You can also walk by the river that flows through the city, called « l’Escaut », and see the « Pont des Trous », a beautiful old bridge.
To eat, I would recommend you some restaurants that you can find in the city center: « le enfants terribles » or « le brasse temps » for typical Belgian food, « Corto Malte » for delicious and cheap tapas, « Monte Cristo » to taste the best italian food in town. otherwise there is a lot of great options for any preferences in the city
