Highs & Lows

Absolutely loved Yuca and Plantain Chips! Just buy them from the various street vendors

As a woman or female presenting person you need to be prepared for a lot of catcalling

Itinerary Overview

Before Nicaragua I was in Honduras and took a direct shuttle from La Ceiba to Leon in Nicaragua. I stayed there for a few nights and went to Granada the first time, after that I went surfing in San Juan del Sur, I came back to Granada the second time and after had awesome days on Isla Ometepe. I ended my nicaraguan travels in Popoyo at the beach. I got around just with local transportation and mostly ate street food - both super affordably and perfect for budget traveling. The variety of food you could buy as a vegetarian was limited, but luckily the mercados and supermercados provide a lot of different products, so I could enjoy some wholesome, diverse meals.

Nicaragua's coast definitely has to offer a lot more of nice beaches and surfing spots, best to be traveled with motorbike as public transport is not the best in these areas. A few friends also told me about the beauty of the Caribbean islands Little and Big Corn.

Granada is so beautiful and tranquil, especially compared to chaotic Leon. I'd recommend taking part in a free walking tour to learn more of the history of the town. The tour started from the Selina Hostel, which is directly at the main plaza and you pay the guide a tip at the end. I also took part in a free chocolate tour at the chocolate museum, some chocolate tasting included. I really loved the fresh orange juice you can buy at the streets and strolling around the city. Two afternoons I just spend in cafés, watching the people around me and feeling the atmosphere of the town. Furthermore, I visited the Massaya Volcano - an active volcano, where you can see the magma - and the Lake Apoyo to cool off from the heat in the city. Both were awesome and the Lake was really needed after a few days in the city with over 30 degrees. I'd definitely recommend to visit Granada whilst you're in Nicaragua!

Isla Ometepe surprised me with its size - from the ferry point it took us almost two hours to get to our hostel with taking the local bus - so don’t underestimate it. The island is covered with a variety of plants, wherever you look, it’s green and together with the two volcanos the place creates a special energy. We explored the island by scooter, which can be easily rented (you can’t do everything by foot and the public transportation is not taking you to all the places, it just brings you around the little pueblos on the island). We went to Ojo del Agua, the Saturday market at Playa Santa Teresa, Punta Jesus Maria, Playa Peru and hiked to the waterfall San Ramon. All the local people were super friendly and we went out to eat every night as there were some good options around. El Zopilote for example is a known place for their pizza night and fireshow.

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

If possible, not travel during rainy season as it was raining every afternoon or evening. And I would also visit the Caribbean islands of Nicaragua (big and little corn)
  • Anything go wrong during the trip?

Got touched inappropriately by a man on the chicken bus and had to deal with a lot of catcalling.
  • Restaurant recommendations?

The Garden Cafe for Coffee and pastries in Granada, Banana Burger in Granada, Comedor Isla Bonita on Ometepe
  • Packing tips?

Rain Jacket if you travel during rainy season, mosquito repellent
  • Transportation Tips?

Local buses are the cheapest option but take some time. Tika Bus provides passages from Managua to a few locations in the country and to the borders
  • Any surprises?

Leon is not completely white, it's just the top of the cathedral

Lodging

  • Oasis Hostel. Popular backpacker hostel with affordable dorms and private rooms. Nothing special but I had a good time here.

  • La Urraca Loca. Super chill hostel with awesome breakfast and great location on the Island.
