Athens Vacation Itinerary

Our trip began when we took a flight to Athens, the wonderful and historic Greek capital. This was the place where the business conference would take place, so it involved a much nicer hotel and some relaxing time by the sea or pool. Still, the time we spent there gave us enough time to walk around the markets, trying some souvlaki, buying beautiful antiques and of course visiting the historic landmarks. The Parthenon and all of the Athenian Acropolis were of course some of the stars in this journey, as well as the Virgins Temple; all of these spots made you feel like there was something greater going on and I found myself deeply respecting the ancient culture that once thrived here. The Great Library and the Academy of Athens were also mind blowing, every corner filled with history, beautiful architecture and art.

One of the best spots we found in the city was Lycabettus Hill. This is the highest point in the city, which will test your endurance but reward you with an incredible view. You can choose to either walk to the top of the mountain or the lighter option, to use a funicular or cliff railway. Any of these is amazing, but I personally recommend walking up, I found it the only way to truly appreciate everything around you. Besides having a spectacular view of the city’s landmarks you can also spot the sea surrounding the city. Up there you can take the chance to stop for something to eat, either at the café for breakfast or lunch or the fancier restaurant for diner; though you may have to make a reservation for that one. Lycabettus was one of the best finds in the trip, it was unbelievable.

Since we had some time to spare while in the city, we rented a car and took a two-hour ride over to Mycenae. This ancient archaeological site is the kind of place that leaves you out of breath, there is no way to properly describe it or anything that compares. For me, this was the highlight of our journey. To give each step knowing how much history and myths happened upon these stones, it was unbelievable. From the moment you reach the Lion Gate, the gateway to the citadel, you can see how much has happened here. Besides walking around, you must take the chance to visit every monument and landmark you can, such as the Treasury of Atreus and the Grave Circle, both tombs holding history itself. Still, what I will not forget was the beautiful sunset by the water as we drove back to Athens.
