Highs & Lows

Path of the Gods Hike

The altitude of the towns ! Lots of steps

Itinerary Overview

Best to fly to Naples - its the closest airport and you have many options to continue travelling to the south, such as buses trains and ferrys.

We spent two nights in Naples and then got a ferry to the Island of Capri.
We spent two nights on the Island of Capri
From here you can get a Ferry then to Positano (flag ship town)and other costal towns like Almafi and Salerno.
And you are also in a great position to see the archaeological wonder that is Pompeii

Capri - Relaxation and hike

Capri Relaxation and hike

This Island had two modes. There are a lot of designer shops for those of us who are interested in shopping for designer brands. Then there are many options for tourists who want to enjoy the stunning views from the small island. The must do is a boat trip around the island. There are many private operators and it is advised to book in advance. Use trip advisor and you should pay around 150 eur for a boat that will take 4 people for 4 hours. There will be towels and drinks included. Our tour guides were eager to make sure we had the best experience.  They allowed us to swim in unique and once in a life time locations. Small hidden caves and small beaches but you have to be a strong swimmer and all is at your own risk. They will also stop at the Blue grotto and this is worth the extra 5 euro ticket where separate tour guides will bring you under the rocks to see the blue water phenomenon.

Surround by Sheer cliffs and a rugged shoreline dotted with small beaches and pastel-coloured fishing villages. The town is a postcard picture destination. The beaches are well maintained and one can enjoy a warm swim with mesmerising views. The town itself is quite small and you would really only spend 2-3 nights here or use it as an anchor to visit other towns.  A must do is the hike called the Path of the Gods. You will get a chance to burn off some of those extra pasta carbs and its a workout ! but take your time and soak in the views on the way. You will walk a total of 6.5km and end up in a town called Bomerano and here you can get a bus back to Positano. Be careful of where you book your accommodation as they all say Xkm from the centre but the town is at the base of the cliff so every kilometre is a workout.  Another tip : when getting off the ferry at Positano there is a luggage drop off service - you might be wary at the start but you will need to avail of this if you have more than 10kg as its not worth it to drag your suitcase on the stones and cobbles, you will need a new suitcase. I think the cost is 10€ per suitcase. They are trusted and the luggage will arrive to your accommodation.

The best thing to do in this small town is go to Villa Cimbrone. It is a ruin of a historic Roman Villa with an array of well maintained gardens but most importantly is boasts the infinity view. It is the best view of the whole coast and you can see until the horizon, it is quite the sight. It is a two bus trip from Positano but if you are staying in Almafi then its only one bus stop so you could leave it for this part of the trip. So Positano - Almafi - Ravello. We had the benefit of having a Naples native in our company and not only a local, but a chef and she recommended a restaurant named Trattoria Pizzeria Cumpa' Cosimo. This restaurant is family owned and the food is incredible and the host and owner will personally greet you and make sure you have the best meal in Italy . The price is incredible value and an incredible experience.

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

The number of nights spent in Positano - would have stayed one less night
  • Anything go wrong during the trip?

Our airport taxi dropped us to the train station instead of the airport and then took off before we realised the mistake he had made - he came back but it left no time to relax at the airport
  • Restaurant recommendations?

Its Italy - you will have no issues ! :P But make sure you like pasta and bread. The food is always fresh and flavourful - my personal favourite restaurant is below : https://www.tripadvisor.it/Restaurant_Review-g194873-d1034534-Reviews-Trattoria_Da_Cumpa_Cosimo-Ravello_Amalfi_Coast_Province_of_Salerno_Campania.html
  • Tips you would give a friend?

Be careful of the accomdation you book, check the exact location and make sure you are ok with steps.
  • Packing tips?

Use packing cubes - these will save you from tearing apart your luggage when you only want a pair of socks. and again leave some room for gifts and souvenir clothes.
  • Transportation Tips?

Pack light ! - do not pack to 100% capacity and leave room for gifts and souvenirs
  • Any surprises?

The number of steps in Positano
  • Booking details?

Did not use a travel agency - this part of Italy you can book with independent operators. Ryan air to fly - booking.com for accommodation.

Lodging

  • Albergo Gatto Bianco - execellent location and value. You will be welcomed by a charming white cat - hence the name. The rooms are clean and functional and the hotel is perfect for people who spend most of their time outside exploring and not for guests who like to lounge around the premises. There is a spa and barber next to the hotel. Staff are friendly and helpful with itineraries.

  • Santiago vacation home Positano - in the height of the tourism season - accommodation can get pricey so this place is great value for money. It has two bedrooms and can sleep 5. It is about 1km from the centre of the town and beach but that 1km is through steep steps like the whole town so please be aware. There is also a convenient shuttle bus that stops really close so you can make use of this. There is a great view from the balcony and you can prepare your own meals and there is supermarket near by. The owner will send detailed directions on how to get to the villa.
