Itinerary Overview

A roadtrip in this amazing land, full of castels and nice landscapes. here some of the castles visited during the trip: chateaux on Nantes, Angers, Chenonceau, Amboise, Brissac, Saumur, Montgeoffroy, Tours.

I was studying in France on that period, and I really enjoyed the trip in this valley, which is more or less 1/2 hours far from Paris (you can take a plane for Paris and then move around with TGVs, the french high-speed trains. however the best option is moving by car) on the west. The  weather is quite cold in autumn, in winter becomes really cold, so if you have the opportunity to choose, please keep in mind that spring is the best moment to travel around France. No seaside, no mountains, only rivers and good architecture. I liked spend the time travelling with my erasmus friends, together we matched travelling, discovering new places and stay together. at the end, this is what tourism is for, right?

Other castles recommended are Chateau de Chaumont-sur-Loire, Chambord, Cheverny, Cully-sur-Loire, Villandry, Blois and du Clos Lucé

Nantes is a quite big city, connected internationally with planes, so it could be a good starting point for your trip, if you are planning to finish it in Paris. Here you can visit the castle, the city center or just walking around. If I have to talk about my personal experience, the difference between this locations and the others (Angers, and all the other little villages with castles) is that here I travelled alone. I decided to spend the entire day by walking around of the city, visiting the touristic places but also take a look at the streets, at the normal places where people lives, offices, restaurants, supermarkets... It's a bit weird, but I also like doing this kind of tourism, to understand the other face of a city, the non touristic one. at the end of the day I walked for 22 kilometers!

Oh, don't forget to see the Elephant!

The first thing you'll see when  you arrive in Angers is the castle, then the city center, wich is small but really nice. The city is not big, but is a perfect place to live, it is European style, with all the facilities and services, you can find everything you need without living in a place of millions of people. Angers is a student city, so the nightlife s quite good, with lots of bars, coffee and discos. I stayed here a few days and it's a good place to stay while trying to discover as much castle as you can in this area. I stayed with friends, so if you have the opportunity to move around you'll be more flexible and it's easier to visit more places. I liked the city, it's really nice. if you have the opportunity, spend some hours walking through the public park close to the castle, I really enjoyed the time spent in the nature.
