Highs & Lows

The resort grounds were beyond phenomenal! There was so much to do, so many restaurants to eat at and the views were stunning

It rained a lot and Montego Bay beaches are quite rocky so we loved having the beautiful pool on the property.

Itinerary Overview

The reason why we love all-inclusive trips is because you pay for it when you book and then you do not worry about a single thing during the trip (although tipping is highly appreciated). We reached Montego Bay late in the afternoon and had a shuttle ready at the airport to take us to the resort. The resort was a 2 hour drive but sitting in an AC coach and taking in the tropical views, you really do not feel this drive much. Plus, we had our 3 month old in a carrier the entire bus ride and she slept throughout - the bumps on the road definitely did not bother her.

Upon arriving at the Grand Palladium, each guest was greeted with a welcome drink. Check in was fairly quick and we were in a gorgeous room in no time. It was our first time travelling with a baby - ever - and we had hauled so much luggage this trip (we actually paid for an extra bag for her) but the resort was kind enough to help us and we got a Bell Boy very quickly to get our bags to our rooms. When you have a baby, people are extremely helpful and thoughtful and they want to make it easier for you.

We had dared to travel to Jamaica with a newborn because our closest friends were getting married there and because my husband was part of the Bridal Party. After debating for months before she was even born, we made the decision to go and it was by far our best decision. Little did we know that this was just a start to our travel adventures with kids and this trip would shape our future trips.

We never knew, after this trip, we were going to be pros at travelling with a little one. If you told us then that this was going to only be a start to many many more trip to come, I would have only laughed.

The views were definitely so beautiful from all around the property.

The beach area is very rocky as expected because the resort is located on a Bay but the pools more than make up for it. The pool is so huge that you always find a lounge charge in the 100s of cabana areas they have around the pool. The swim up bars are so spacious that even on the busiest of days, we had a spot at the bar with drinks served fairly quick and the baby loved swimming in the beautiful pools as well. Some of her best naps were on the lounge chair right by the pool!

Like I always say, do not let a baby stop you from having fun but make them a part of your fun and they are sure to surprise you. Because we went for a wedding, we quite often joined into the late night entertainment with our friends and the baby slept in her stroller with a Babybanz to cancel out all the noise around her and she seemed so undisturbed by it.

There were so many choices for food around the resort and we never seemed to be short them. My favourite was the arcade area and the cafe there served delicious hot Jamaican patties - those are my absolute favourite and I still cannot stop thinking of those (wish I had eaten maybe just one more!). There was also an a la carte restaurant that served Indian food and it was the most delicious Indian food we ate!

Let's talk about the drinks! There are so many bars around the property that you will never be standing without a drink in your hand. Jamaicans make some of the most delicious drinks and even the virgin ones were so delicious! Because I was feeding the baby, I only indulged myself with alcoholic beverages once the entire trip and had to 'Pump and Dump' but Hey! it was so worth it.

We had heard so much about Rick's cafe and knew that this would definitely be a place we would want to visit.

We weren't wrong at all! Imagine diving off a 35 foot cliff into the blue water? Well, that is what Rick's Cafe is worldly famous for. And also the gorgeous sunsets you can see from here while sipping on some delicious cocktails or lounging in their beautiful pool.

I was so excited to dive off a cliff and so was my hubby but travelling with a newborn does come with certain restrictions and this was one of them. While we would have loved to do it, we also knew that this was where we would have to draw the line and instead, we watching others jump off the cliff, clapped at their bravery while sitting in the Cafe, enjoying some nice drinks and hot food.

When I do return to Jamaica, this will definitely be on my to-do list because I do want to experience this for myself. Once you jump off the cliff and into the water, the current is pretty strong and you need to really put in all that you got to come back to the shore area. If you do get pulled away by the current, you will be surprised to sit in a cave which is known to be the place Bob Marley sat and wrote his songs. That would be worth the pull from the currents!

Dunns River waterfalls was another must do for us! We were lucky to have our friends parents watch the baby while we climbed the waterfalls. This was the only reason why we were able to do this and one we are thankful for to date.

You are put into groups of people and you hold hands, for a human chain and literally climb up a waterfall. There are natural slides through the falls where you get to slide down or there are natural massage areas - what I like to call it. The force of the water is so powerful that you can sit under it and get a nice massage.

You need to wear water shoes to be able to do this climb. You can purchase them there or even wear running shoes - which I did! This was such a memorable trip for us because it was the first and probably only time in our life that we climbed a 180 foot waterfall. It may sound quite a bit but it took us around 1.5 hours to climb it and we did stop a lot in the middle to enjoy the natural waterslides.

Q & A

  • What would you have changed?

This was the first time we were travelling with the baby and as soon as it was the baby's sleep time, we would run to the room. Halfway through the trip we realized that she was content to sleep anywhere and we can stay out longer. This was definitely a game changer for us. We would have also packed much less but again, it was something we learnt this trip and it was very important for us to have this lesson because it shaped all our future travels.
  • Anything go wrong during the trip?

Honestly, nothing I can think of! This trip was perfect with all its ups and downs because we evolved so much as parents and as future family travellers.
  • Restaurant recommendations?

All the restaurants at this resort are worth a try! You will not be disappointed with where you choose to eat.
  • Tips you would give a friend?

Definitely visit the Luminous Lagoon. We went there late one night (again we had someone watching the baby while she slept). It was an extremely short excursion but after sun down, you are taken on a ferry into the water. You cannot see anything but you stop at one point and you are asked to jump into the water. You jump into something that feels like much but you have no idea what it is but what you see is pure magic!
  • Packing tips?

Since it is an all-inclusive, make sure you pack some good evening dresses because people do dress up at the a la carte meals! Lots of sunscreen and lots of memory space on your camera!
  • Transportation Tips?

The resort covers your trip to and front the airport. All excursions include transportation as well so you literally do not have to worry about anything.
  • Any surprises?

At the start, I was a little upset with the beach not being very swim friendly. The rocks definitely did not allow it. Even though I knew from before, I only believed it once I was there and saw for myself how it was. But by day 2, I was enjoying the pool way too much and never missed the beach even for an instant.

Lodging

  • We stayed at the Grand Palladium resort and this resort is attached to the Lady Hamilton so you pay for one resort but really get to enjoy two beautiful and huge resorts and all the facilities of each of them! The grounds of the two resorts together are so huge that travelling from one end to the other can be quite challenging with little kids. We were happy to learn fairly quick that they had a buggy that you could call for that took you from one spot to the other.
